Anglers will take off from Twin Ridge Recreation Area located at State Road 624, Twin Ridge Marina Road in Henry, Va., at 7 a.m. each morning. Weigh-ins will be at Walmart located at 976 Commonwealth Boulevard, in Martinsville, Va., beginning at 4 p.m. each day. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

The 566 acres that now comprise the Matthews State Forest was originally settled by the Nuckolls family in the late 1700s. The Nuckolls family cemetery sits on a ridge overlooking the homestead. Judge Jack Matthews purchased the property from a Nuckolls heir in 1946. The Judge enjoyed all types of wildlife, gardening, what he called “old-time apples” and planting trees of any kind. One of his passions was for the American chestnut, and he had a strong desire to see its return.

The New River winds its way through Giles County, flowing north for 37 miles of Class I, II and III rapids, offering rafting and paddling through a scenic wonderland of cliffs and palisades. The river hosts big smallmouth bass and flathead catfish ready for the fisherman.
