Chilhowie

Our goal is to provide a musical event that will showcase the various musicians and singers in the surrounding area while teaching the aspects of musicianship as well as encouraging the development of new talents while at the same time providing entertainment as a service to the community and the county. The Smyth County Jam has really grown over the years and is almost solely responsible for exposing our area to the many great talents and people who have adorned our stages and audiences. Its like everywhere weve stepped, a new jam has sprung up. This is a testament to our success.

Independence

Every Wednesday evening at the Historic 1908 Courthouse! Come to play. Come to listen. Come to dance. Experience a true mountain music jam, where you will hear acoustic, unamplified music as it is played when folks seek only to entertain themselves and each other. This is not a performance! This is a wonderful opportunity to 'sit close', hear the clack of guitar picks and the feet tapping as music is shared among the group. Between tunes, you'll hear the folks discussing everything from the history of a tune to the last bad joke they heard. Come join in!

Rocky Mount

At first glance there is nothing very unusual about the Dairy Queen in Rocky Mount Virginia. It is pretty much a typical Dairy Queen as Dairy Queens go. But if you are there on a Thursday morning from September to the end of May you are in for a treat. There is mountain music - mainly bluegrass - at the Rocky Mount Dairy Queen on Thursday mornings! You had better get there early too or you will be left standing out by the coffee dispenser. The Dairy Queen dining area quickly fills up with the regular attendees who make it there week after week.

Fries

Thursday evenings in Fries (pronounced "freeze"), everyone meets for a friendly 2 hour (or longer) jam of old time, bluegrass, and country music commences. Everyone is welcome to come and join in - from local musicians to visitors to those just learning to play. And if you just like to listen to music played the old time way, then this is the place to come. Although many of our local artists are known nationally and internationally and have travelled extensively performing our area's traditional heritage music, they still drop by the Jams as time allows.
