Outdoor Recreation

Relax on a lazy float down the New River in the sunshine. Get your blood pumping as you navigate whitewater rapids on the Russell River or in Kibler Valley. Kayak or raft or canoe at your own pace down rivers that wind through peaceful countryside and blue mountains.

Find your outdoor recreation adventure right here in Southwest Virginia.

There are road races and mountain biking to challenge the most dedicated cyclist. But don't think our bike trails are only for champions. One of the easiest and most enjoyable rides can be found on the Virginia Creeper Trail, 17 miles of gentle downhill coasting from Whitetop Mountain to Damascus, a perfect day's outing for cyclists of any age.

In fact, old rail lines, with their gentle grades, have been transformed into wonderful trails along the New River, from Saltville to Chilhowie, in Blacksburg, and along the Guest River south of Coeburn. They're perfect for running, walking, strolling or cycling.

Raft or Kayak
Enjoy whitewater rapids along the Russell River, near Flannagan Lake and Breaks Interstate Park.

Looking for more adventures on foot? The Appalachian Trail is our best-known hiking opportunity, but you'll find good trails in all of Southwest Virginia's state and national parks and forests, as well as along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Horseback riding? There are miles and miles of horse trails, with easy parking access. Some feature campgrounds especially designed for trail riders and their mounts.

Throughout Southwest Virginia are outfitters, who can provide everything you need from bait to boats to bikes. Some offer guides, tours and group events that are fun for beginners and veterans alike.

There are opportunities for rock climbing. Fishing in streams and lakes and rivers. Swimming. Sailing. Jet-skis or water-skis. Your sport, at your speed.

Sample Southwest Virginia's great outdoors — it's made for recreation.
