Ongoing May 5 - 30: The Art of Duane Cregger -
Cregger’s beautiful, enigmatic abstractions are rooted in his personal journey: the search for harmony between a mostly urban adult life and his return to a family heritage of centuries-old Appalachian roots. Brightly colored underpainting suggests his memories of an Appalachian great-grandmother with a living room of colorful quilt scraps in paper bags. Many layers of paint suggest the accumulation of history, the fascination of the archaic, so that his technique of scraping through layers suggests his discovery of the jewel-like treasures of the past. Mysterious marks evoke writing in an unknown language, a language that is perhaps too deeply personal to be articulated with ordinary speech, the language of the unexplored and of that which must forever remain just outside our grasp. These paintings remind us that perhaps the things that are most important to understand lie beyond our limited capacity of reason.
