I create decorative items out of wheat straw. The techniques can be traditional or new as can the designs. The dampened straw is plaited into a variety of pattererns to make tree ornaments or larger wall hangings.
Wheat weaving dates to hre-history when the spirits of good harvests were preserved in the last sheaf of grain from the field. The sheaf was kept until spring. Over time the sheaf could be shaped into a figure or design, an idol, or corn "dolly." In early agricultural communities various designs of weavings were considered a good luck harvest symbol.
